The 2011-12 NBA season was just over. Miami's 5-game victory over the promising Oklahoma City Thunder was still fresh in everybody's mind. The whole NBA world was preparing for "The Revenge", willing to see Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden challenge once again Miami's big-three in basketball's biggest scenario.
Although, everything was ruined from one night to the other. With reasons nobody could fully understand, the Oklahoma City Thunder decided to trade James Harden alongside a couple of players to the Houston Rockets, preventing a potential dynasty from happening.
From this moment was clear that nobody would be able to really challenge the Miami Heat in the Finals. Oklahoma City was now missing a pivotal part of their team. San Antonio didn't seem to have enough to provide a real challenge. Indiana wasn't fully developed yet, and Chicago's team was full of injuries.
This was the perfect moment for something spectacular to happen, something that could be possible in a sci-fi movie, but didn't seem possible in the real world. Then David Stern announced that, for almost 15 years, he had been secretly investing in a revolutionary medicine.
"Age Away" could bring back to their primes to every player to have put a foot on a basketball court, and all with only one dose. People, including other NBA players, were sceptical about the medicine's efectiveness, until Tracy McGrady, who was testing the medicine, made an incredible comeback from his injuries, doing moves only remembered by the people who had watched him playing for the Orlando Magic, more than 10 years ago.
It was time that someone challenge the Miami Heat again... |
With it's reveal, a lot of current and legendary players were willing to take the medicine. Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Paul Pierce, Vince Carter and Allen Iverson were the first to take one after T-Mac's show. Then a lot of basketball's living legends, like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Julius Erving, Scottie Pippen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or David Robinson announced their comebacks after taking the medicine.
Soon, the whole league was a mess. A lot of players were being waived in order to have room for the legends. Even the Miami team was disrupted, as LeBron James took this as an opportunity for going back to Cleveland and try to win a ring for his home city, now sharing team with future star Kyrie Irving and legends like Larry Johnson or Larry Nance.
In the span of only two months, almost 40 retired players came back, and other active players were able to regain their lost prime. Yes, not only McGrady could "revive" his past talents, but also Greg Oden, Brandon Roy, Darryl Dawkins, Bill Walton and many others took this as their last chance to rewrite their legacy.
All 30 teams had rebuild their squads mixing legendary players with other talented, and not-so talented, players that were part of their teams in the last season. Now, the league had brought a brand new interest in the match-ups, as now there was no such thing as tanking teams, and everyone could be considered as title contenders. In every basketball fan's mind there was only one phrase. "What a time to be alive..."
